I said another goodbye, until next time, last night. This beautiful girl started lessons in 2011. As she heads into Year 12 next year she has decided to take a break to concentrate on her studies. I asked her to play one of her favourite pieces that she had learnt over the years and she chose this one – Pachabel’s Canon.
We had a conversation about her time at Rhythm and Tunes Piano School and she reflected on how helpful it had been for her to learn how to play a large repertoire of music before looking at the notation. She commented that she had had previous experience, before enrolling here, of trying to learn the notes and rhythm as well as navigate her way around the keyboard and how much easier it had been to separate out all of these steps.
Her other feedback was that she could see so much benefit in being taught how to recognise the tools and strategies that are used in this program to decode and memorise sheet music. She said it had helped her to understand and analyse music, especially the knowledge of chords that she had developed.
What I was most excited about was her confidence that she could now pick up any music and have the ability to process and memorise it using her knowledge of how music is constructed.
