Are you tired of fluffing around the edges of your music? Is it time to get serious and set a daily commitment to just get it done? Get those chords in your fingers once and for all – major and minor in all inversions, augmented, diminished, maj7, minor 7th’s, dominant 7ths, 9th, 11th, 13th, #11, b5. Isn’t it time you knew what all those chord symbols actually mean?!
You were classically trained, so you only knew how to trawl through all the dots on the page, not how to process and understand chords, which, let’s face it, is the infrastructure of music. Your teacher may have talked about it but if you’re honest it never made a lot of sense to you. It’s hard to analyse music without this fundamental knowledge.
How much do you want this? Some people tell me they want it but then allow other life priorities to take over. What’s that about? A little bit of self- sabotage perhaps? A little bit of subconscious thinking that they’re not worthy of finding time each day to play the piano. After all, it is the most wonderful way to pass the time and sometimes we just don’t think we actually deserve that indulgence. Yes! It’s indulgent to give yourself the time and, at the same time, that is the only way you’re going to improve and flourish with your playing. So what’s it going to be? Will you start allowing yourself the space to carve out a regular time slot that is your time to reconnect with the instrument you have always loved, but keep treating like a second-class citizen.
The piano deserves your time.
The piano is worthy of your time.
The piano can provide you with the most profound sense of joy, fulfilment and excitement and yet you still hesitate.
Well, I have news for you. If you continue to put everyone else’s needs above your own, you may well find yourself at the end of your life living in regret. That’s right, they have done studies on what people say on their death beds. Australian palliative care nurse Bronnie Ware, wrote about the most common regret expressed by her patients, which was: “I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.”
Isn’t it time to make an intention to return to your music? Not a wishy-washy intention that will keep allowing you to make all the excuses in the world as to why music is at the bottom of your list of priorities again. I mean a decision that you won’t allow yourself to break, for any reason. That beautifully rewarding playing time each day, that you well know you’re craving, is something that happens without fail. You no longer let other people violate your personal boundaries.
