Do you set yourself intentions for the new year? If so, I would love to know what you are hoping to achieve in this new decade.
Better health and fitness?
Improved relationships?
A brighter outlook on life in general?
Returning to your music?
Sometimes we can have the best of intentions but our beliefs around our capabilities can hold us back, in fact, those pesky beliefs can strangle the life out of your desire to change things up and make progress. These beliefs can be caused by negative past experiences. Perhaps you were told to lip-sync in the choir at school or that you were never going to be a concert pianist and got wrapped over the knuckles for dropping your wrists or not curving your fingers. These experiences can really control you and prevent you from stepping forward into your dream of playing again. This time purely to express yourself musically, as you are, because you are exactly perfect at this moment.
I recall backpacking around Ireland in my twenties and found myself at a family home participating in a good old fashioned sing-a-long around the piano. The Irish love their music. At one point in the evening, some women there cracked a joke about my singing voice. I would have been happy for the floor to swallow me up in that moment! It really is such a personal attribute to attack and we do it in western culture all the time, unfortunately. I must have gotten over it to a certain extent, as a few weeks later I was in a church in London singing away enthusiastically (and loudly as if to drown that mean women’s comment out of my psyche) when at the sign of peace, a gentleman turned around and complimented me on my singing. Go figure. I guess it’s just all about perspective.
So, are you going to continue to hide behind other people’s opinions of you or are you going to be in charge of your future goals from now on? Stop giving your power away to a past comment. Smash that belief you have developed because of someone’s insensitive remarks. They probably didn’t like themselves very much which is why they were lashing out at you anyway.
It’s time.
It’s YOUR time.
