So, I’m sitting in a lesson beside one of my absolutely beautiful and committed students this week. She is playing the chords for ABBA’s Mama Mia and I am playing the melody with her, as a duet. We have been practising for a few weeks now so it’s starting to sound absolutely fabulous if we do say so ourselves. Our objective has been to play it at the upcoming Winter Piano Party.
THEN, all of a sudden, out of nowhere, comes this most gorgeous, sweet, soft voice. She is singing! Not only is she singing, but she is also singing in front of all of us!!! It was such a surprise to me as this is a BIG thing for ANYONE to have the confidence to do ‘off the cuff’. Sadly, in western culture we run the risk of being made fun of for our singing voice, don’t we? This particular child also has a reasonably reserved personality; however, I believe her confidence has grown since participating in both piano and singing lessons. Needless to say, it was a goosebumps and pinprick tears in my eyes moment! Her Mum has since whispered to me that it was also a very proud mum moment as well. I don’t think she’ll be needing me at the party after all, as I’ll just organise a microphone for her now : )
When was the last time you just let yourself go and followed the flow? As adults, we get so caught up in singing the ‘right’ notes, singing the ‘right’ tune, singing the ‘right’ words, doing the ‘right’ thing, wondering who’s watching and what they will think. What would happen if you just threw it all to the wind and experienced the FREEDOM to play and even, God forbid, sing! When was the last time you truly felt free?
